Reviews - Swordfishtrombones

Review by Pete McGinn27th January 2002

I got my son (17 yrs) to buy me a tom waits album for xmas, not as a soundbite but because i have only got him on vynl n tape. so he got me swordfishtrombones, still on the change from the jazz based days to the swamp maze that we have come to love and know. it starts with a thumping sound into "underground" but for me he truely sparkles on tracks like "shore leave, in the neighbourhood, franks wild years and" soldiers things". dont get me wrong its not just the personal songs that do it for me because in later works tracks like whats he doing in there, gun street girl, such a scream and chocolate jesus do volumes for me or should i just say i love the man he makes me feel,he makes me laugh and cry inspires me to do my own thing (with a little influence).
