Reviews - Extremely Cool

Review by Myrtle Funge - England, UK20th April 2001

This second album of drummer/vocalist Chuck E. Weiss ventures forth with a raucous Elmore James style slide. This heralds the upbeat Devil With Blue Suede Shoes in which Weiss does a variety of McCartney-like oooh's.
As the opening bars of Deeply Sorry rolled out the speaker I was sure Weiss would start singing, 'Minnie the Moocher'. But the song plods along at a leisurely pace retaining it's 1920's backing throughout. Weiss apologises profusely replacing Cab Calloway's Ho de ho de ho's with wo wo's and the braying of a sadly amused horse.
With straw firmly placed in mouth and accordion pumped we head into Cajun territory for Oh Marcy. No Cajun tune is complete without a smattering of French lyrics thrown in. All that's missing is a toothless octogenarian on the vocals.
A Hammond organ blares as Weiss emulates Waits whilst giving his money to the Pygmy Fund.
Co-written and sung with Waits, It Rains On Me is reminiscent of Waits's 'Cold Water'. This will make happy bunnies out of most Waitsites.
The walking double bass and tish tish drums take Sunny Could Lick All Them Cats puffing along the rails.
Next we move swiftly along to Chuck Berry rock and roll territory. Go cats. All participants seem impressed with the end result of Jimmy Would.
I thought the first few bars of the title track Extremely Cool would launch into the Pink Panther theme. All the correct instrumentation seems to be in place for that to happen.
Just Don't Care could well be a slow version of Jimmy Would, but I just don't care. Is that Duane Eddy on guitar?
This album is credited with five producers so what happened to the sound of Roll On Jordan?
Starting with some profound poetry Do You Know What I Idi Amin collapses into an unmistakable Tom Waits repetitious groove.
Horseface inspires utterances of 'Have a banana'. Yep from me Horseface.
Finally it all concludes with Rocking In The Kibbitz Room which can only be Horseface with the McCartney influences back in force.
