Reviews - Drunk On The Moon

Review by Andre Hunt16th January 2002

The Drunk On The Moon CD of Tom Waits has got to be the best surprise of my boot collecting. Everything on it is classic, and if it has been on offical releases, the versions here are better, especially the Soundstage performances (available through the right channels on video, and an absolute must have). But you have to hear Tom opening with a monologue about the early days, a big bit of rambling and lying about 500 pound Mexican women, visectomies, Typing on stage, and well, that ain't the half of it. My personal favorite is "Playin' Hookey' a real swinger in the Small Change tradition, with great sounds and lyrics about how cool it is to be outta school. Most of this CD is material unavailable on any concert recording. Super rare. They should never have bothered with the recent collection of previously released material and just put this baby out. Pure gold.
