Reviews - Closing Time

Review by Olga - Gorzów, Poland 19th November 2006

Grapefruit Moon - That's the most wonderful song in the whole world! Why? "Cause every time I hear that melody, well something breaks inside..." I just love it!

Martha - This song is a poem, as is Tom Waits himself. Not just a poet, but a poem too. He is everything for me, he's my inspiring Muse.

The line 'freeways, cars & trucks' gets us underway, and who could ever once think these words could evoke such beauty. An album for the night, to keep under your pillow for safe keeping. In a world today where every second debut album is touted as the 'best since..' well this is a debut and must be one of the most truly amazing and complete debuts of all time! Songs that will survive and remain in the burning hearts of generations to come.

Besides Alice, this is, I think the most touching Tom Waits record. It's a bit on a mainstream side sometimes, as far as the overall sound is concerned, but that just adds to the beauty of it. There are four or five best Tom Waits' songs on that album. The ones he never talks about anymore. Sadly. You want me to name 'em? Ol' 55, Hope I Don't Fall, Martha, Rosie, Grapefruit Moon. Yes, and add the definitive Tom Waits instrumental.
