Reviews - Berlin 18th July 1999

Review by Jakob Dall2nd November 1999

"What's he building in there" was definitely the best this evening, Tom talks more to the audience in general, and seems really, really happy and enjoying himself. We are told that we are beautiful as is the Theater, and Berlin's been great. I throw a handful of confetti in the air a couple of times (during "Tango...", of course), probably to great disturbance to my neighbours, but I don't give a hoot what they say...
I beg your Pardon (from "One from the Heart") was completely new for me - wonderful, and Cemetary Polka is this time performed immaculately, and as I recall without the "hahahah"-verse. Singapore was first encore, and new, introduced, I think, as a song about travelling. It's one of his most picture painting songs (?)lyricswise for me, so I sang along the best I could. It ended with Tom doing the thunder/rain/ocean sounds in the end himself!! Brilliant!
I almost cried during strange weather, which before the weekend I'd never really noticed although I got it in a live version - that's a very innovative melody in my ears, I love it.
Fish in the Jailhouse (outtake from MV) was introduced with a story I've unfortunately forgotten. It was about someone able to open things with fishbones...
Encores included also for the first time this weekend "Come on up to the house" (which after Saturday had become quite special) and "House where nobody lives", People were not too keen to get up and dance and STAY up to my disappointment, but as I did as the only one on the first 5 rows anyways during Raindogs, I got eyecontact with the ever smiling Andrew behind the drums; he understood. Or maybe I imagined that. Anyway I had to dance a little during my last Tom show this century. And then as the last one we got "Picture in a frame", "this is for Katherine" "WHEEEEEWWWW", whistle, whistle!! F****** A!! I think I have to agree with Karl-Heinz that Sunday probably was the best show of the three, among other things because Tom seemed so happy and content.
