Reviews - Alice     (Page 1 of 2)

Review by Andrew - England, UK10th July 2007

Fish and Bird - If tears had a voice then it would be called Tom Waits and this would be the song it sang over and over again. Absolutely beautiful!

Review by J Turner - Wales, UK2nd September 2006

Table Top Joe - The irony of the rhythmic and 'light' music counterpointed with the ugliness of the subject (a metaphor for all sorts of problems, disabilities, disfunctionalisms - physical and mental) is one of Wait/Brennan's trademarks. And then we go straight into the more obvious pathos of the soundscape of Lost in the Harbour. Pure brilliance - and good old-fashioed showmanship!

Review by Jake - Canada10th January 2006

Reeperbahn - A skeleton orchestra behind a man with a fresh bullet wound in his stomach, his last attempt at trying to explain things before he dies.

Review by Kitty - Spain26th August 2005

Fish & Bird - It's one of the most beautiful song that I've never heard. And his song is just so honest...I love it!!!

Review by Matthew - Ohio, USA23rd January 2005

I'm Still Here - I can loop this song over and over and never get sick of it. There's something to said for the amount of emotion in his lyrics and the length of this song. It's like a quick punch to the gut that you never saw comin.

Review by Aidan - Australia22nd January 2005

Kommienezuspadt - What can I say... Another ripper that makes me want to jump up and down on the bar of a smokey basement pub wearing heavy boots, long shorts and braces!

Poor Edward - This song perfectly describes my life, except for the suicide part. We'll see about that. It's one of the few songs that have actually made me cry. It echoes my own experiences so perfectly, it's uncanny. Oddly enough, of the few songs that had made me cry, all of them have been by Tom Waits. He's an amazing artist, and this song is just another testament to that fact. I'm surprised there hasn't been a musical based on Franks Wild Years yet, maybe I'll have to make one.

Review by The Other - Los Angeles, USA6th January 2005

Watch Her Disappear - During my three hours trip to San Jacinto Mountains, and on the way back to Los Angeles I listened to a song from Tom Waits' Alice over and over: Watch Her Disappear.
For years I have been addicted to Tom Waits. I discovered him sometime in 1990, or 1991. I listened to Frank's Wild Years at a friend’s house, where we used to listen to music and drink alcohol, both being offenses punishable under Iranian law.
I remember I discovered Tom Waits the same night I drank Stolichnaya vodka for the first time. In a country where you didn’t have a CD store, in a country where you couldn’t find any drink other than terrible homemade raisin vodkas, "TomWaits/Stolichnaya" was a great mixture, a heavenly pleasure.
Tom Waits reminds me of Tehran, the city I hate and the city I love, both for the same reasons: for all the pleasures and sufferings that makes its character, and all the sorrows it carries on its shoulders.

I've been a fanatic of Tom for about 6 years now. He has never disappointed me. Alice is another great album. "Poor Edward", I must say, is amazing.

Review by M. Judge - USA13th June 2004

Hi--I've never posted here before, but a few odd details about "Alice" interest me so that I have to hear others' opinions.

First, in "Kommienezuspadt", I've always heard that he was just hollering cod-German, but what Franziska wrote intrigued me: it sounds like, near the end of the song, he's saying, "And we can't be late," which would make sense given the meaning of the title phrase. Given that, I have to wonder if the rest of the song has some hidden meaning.

Also, did anyone else notice the similarity between "Tabletop Joe" and "The Eyeball Kid", from "Mule Variations"? Is Tom trying to tell us something here? First of all, in "Eyeball Kid", Tom says, "The seventh of December, 1949, they got what they'd been wishing for all that time," and that's his birthday. Second, each song reminds me of the deformed baby from the David Lynch film "Eraserhead" and the organ music playing throughout the movie. Any thoughts?

Kommienezuspadt - I Love this song, since i am german. But the laughter scares me.... and the way he says it just sounds like my mother :)

Review by Jeff Ross8th May 2004

Flowers Grave - This song is extremely beautiful. From now on I'm going to put a flower on every flowers grave...but then that one will die, and I'll have to put a flower on its grave...Damn...This is complicated. Either way, this is one of the songs that really got me into Tom Waits, the imagery he uses is so powerful, and he doesn't attempt to be pretentious, everyone can identify with his lyrics.

Review by Luke - Little Rock, Arkansas, USA30th March 2004

Kommienezuspadt - Great piece. Typical of his art to begin from a dark corner only to soon come into the spotlight of a circus. What a great example of absurdism. It moves the mind beyond the head. Don't be late.

Review by Trish25th March 2004

Poor Edward - The song "Poor Edward" is based on the real life of Edward Mordake. (I was just clued into this a few days ago)

Review by Steve - England, UK15th March 2004

I'm Still Here - This short song is crying with feeling and weeps with emotion.Tom has produced a mini classic here. How can one not want to wallow in the sadness, longing and aching that this bijou of a song beautifully emits?

Review by Franziska - Germany14th January 2004

Kommienezuspadt - Actually it sounds quite correct, though the spelling would be slightly different in German: "Komme nie zu spät" - the words he repeats over and over again mean "Don't be late, be in time!"
I actually prefer "Alice" to "Blood Money" because it's more mystical.

Review by Jay (eccentric,artist) - Ontario, Canada29th December 2003

What an immaculetly, devine, masterpiece, it is so exquist it should be exhibited in an art gallery along with the soundtrack, from Punch Drunk Love. My favorites are Alice, Kommienezuspadt, Table Top Joe, We're All Mad, Reeperbahn, Everything You Can Think.

Review by Dr. Sensei - Monterey, California, USA10th December 2003

Flowers Grave - This is the Third song on Alice. It constantly mentions dreamland. The Third son on Blood money constantly mentions dreamland as well. Coincidence? I think not! Tom Waits isn't fooling anyone!

Review by Jon - Maryland, USA17th November 2003

I have to admit that I 'discovered' Mr Waits later than most. Until recently, I was more familiar with his creepy role of Renfield in "Dracula," than of his legendary status as a singer-songwriter. in short, the first time I listened to this song, I wept. I was trapped by the despair and lonliness in his voice and his words. And as a burgeoning musician, I only hope that I can create something as vivid, heartfelt, and touching as this truly beautiful song. Mr Waits, I am 24 years old and I would carry your guitar case anyday, anywhere. I hope that my generation comes to embrace you the way that I have.

Review by Sojourner - New Jersey, USA7th November 2003

I'm still here - Like all of his love songs, this is just another beautiful song. Even deep down in the basement of his voice it is still an emotion filled song that is beautifully accompanied and is just a treat for the ears. And the lyrics are so true... so beautiful...

Review by Cunha - Afhganistan26th June 2003

Watch Her Disappear - Creepy, this Tom Waits guy, his mind has a really pervert part... Maybe not that much but anyway, I wouldnt ask him to babysit my children...

Review by Kenneth Lien19th May 2003

Poor Edward - This song is unique in that way that it's beautiful and sad, but also creepy. It could very well be a horrortale or a love story.

Review by Kevin - Canada19th April 2003

Fish & Bird - A slow sad song about a love which can never be. Tom Waits is one of the best true musicians singer/songwriters left. He can do so much with his scratchy raw vocals and simple powerful lyrics.

Review by Cristian - Melbourne, Australia1st April 2003

Review by Marius - Madrid, Spain4th March 2003

Sorry for writing you in spanish, but this web is much better than the official one and i think you need to include some spanish Waits´ fans reviews.
Me despido in english:
Keep on Tom; you´ve achieved your own state of grace !!!
PS: hey, Tom how about coming to Europe?
