Reviews - Alice (The Original Demos)

Review by Les Nero18th April 2001

I guiltily admit that I aquired a copy through a (ahem) popular music trading network. As any Tom Waits fan is probably reading this, you won't be too disappointed in the album.
The sound is rough, experimental and none too pleasing to first timers. In essense just what his audience desires.
Through a tangled clockwork of bizarre dreamscape images and disjointed rythyms, he parades a panorama worthy of the tale for what it really is; a parade of wackaloons for a very nieve little girl.
A cast of characters including tabletop joe (hail the eyeball kid) and an old alterboy, the journey is a rollarcoaster for even a veteran to experience.
There are a couple of tracks that can take take the paint off the wall so make sure you are outside in a private place when you are listening to it. Particularily the one with the German title, because of that one my dog bites little kids now.
All in all a tasty look behind the wizards curtain at what can REALLY happen if he lets go in the lab.

If you can find a copy of Alice (and are a Tom Wait's fan), buy it, you won't be disappointed. It's as good as any of his "official" releases. The sound quality is pretty good, considering it's a bootleg of demos.
